Aim to Be Zero Waste

What does it mean to be Zero Waste?

It means absolutely none of the products or materials you use are thrown away, so that nothing goes to the landfill (or worse, the ocean). By aiming to become zero waste, you have the least amount of impact on our planet and our oceans. The root cause of plastic pollution stops here.

If you're just starting out, take it step-by-step. No one is perfect, but small changes add up to powerful results. These simple alternatives below can help you lead a more sustainable life.

Some of these products are available to UNCW POP members and students. Come find us at the next tabeling event or general meeting to get yours (and at reduced prices too…sweet!)

Mason Jars

Mason Jars are great for storage and bulk shopping, especially when aiming to cut plastic packaging and waste at the grocery store. Visit your local market (our favorite is Tidal Creek Co-oP) to find bulk items. Grains, coffee beans, peanut butter, shampoo/conditioner, spices, nuts, and frozen fruit—available throughout Wilmington. Don’t know how to bulk? Check this video out to learn how!

16 oz mason Jars available- (more sizes coming soon!)

Reusable Bee’s Wrap

Sick of the plastic wrap covering your half-eaten avocado or leftover lasagna? Switch to reusable food wrap, like Bee’s Wrap (and it smells like honey). Bee’s Wrap is made in Vermont with beeswax, organic cloth, tree resin, and organic jojoba oil.

Bee’s Wrap 3 pack (small, medium, large) available.

Georganics Toothpaste & Mouthwash Tablets

Now this is pretty neat. All-organic toothpaste and mouthwash tablets from Georganics, 100% plastic-free (even the shipping!) Check them out! They have a variety of other plastic-free oral products.

Plaine Products

Plaine Products provides cruelty free, all-natural, vegan bathroom products, and better yet- 100% plastic-free and reusable. Just order your product, subscribe to get more, and swap out the empty with the new in the mail. So simple and easy, and their products are incredible! On a college-budget? That’s okay, Plaine Products offers 30%-off subscription ad 25%-off first orders for UNCW students. Check them out and get the codes at our meetings!

Plaine Products rosemary-mint-vanilla shampoo, conditioner, and face wash available.

Bamboo Cutlery

Bamboo sets available- include bamboo fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks, straw, and cleaner, all held together with a green or white roll-up pouch. Perfect for on-the-go meals, eating on campus, or travel.

Metal & Bamboo Straws

Straws are one of the most commonly found single-use items littering our beaches and ocean. They are used for one smoothie or iced coffee, and then thrown away (In fact in the US every day, 500 million straws are used…that sucks!) Instead, use reusable metal or bamboo straws. Check out this video to #stopsucking!

Metal straws (bent) and bamboo (straight) available.

Bamboo Toothbrush

Keep those pearly whites clean with toothbrushes made from bamboo instead of plastic.

Charcoal-bamboo toothbrushes available.

Stainless Steel Razors

For guys and gals, these stainless steel razors work just fine -just occasionally replace the blade and they last a lifetime! Stainless steel razors available. Also try plastic-free shaving brushes and shaving soap bars.

Plastic Free Soap & Other DIY Products

Get plastic-free soap at your local market or store (Tidal Creek Co-oP and Whole Foods got some). Such an easy switch! Available soon.

Also try making your own products at home using simple ingredients (which you can get in bulk!) Here are some cool recipes. Stay tuned for UNCW POP meetings- we will be showing you how to make some DIY products real soon!
